Abstract:
»Existing studies about rape have explicated that movies about rape are means to resist rape culture. This study however maintains that movies about rape provide the lens with which to investigate Nigeria’s rape culture as well as gain insight into Nigerian societal perception of rape-revenge practices. Thus, the study undertakes a discourse and textual analysis of the framing and representation of rape culture and rape-revenge in two Nollywood movies: Eje Mi (NGA 2021) and Right Time (NGA 2021). Using insights from frame analysis, the study provides succinct details of the nature of Nigerian societal attitudes towards rape and rape-revenge. Findings from the study evince that according to the predominant representation in films, the state of victimhood is a constant state of aggression and violence – which only changes when the victim takes revenge or is avenged. Victimhood is thus a prerape-revenge state – it is reconfigured after revenge has been enacted. However, despite being Nigerian feminists’ attempt at reconstructing victimhood and ending the culture of silencing victims of rape, the movies uphold certain patriarchal notions that blame women for rape, at least partly. Also, rape-revenge in the movies is portrayed as an act that only seems to be justifiable if the victim is a child. The study offers a form of distinctive narrative about the extent to which rape-revenge provides an emotional and physical healing process for victims of sexual crimes, thereby reconfiguring notions of victimhood, guilt and culpability of all parties.«
